Professional bass fishing’s premier championship to head back to Arkansas

May - 25 - 2010

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — FLW Outdoors and the Hot Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau announced Tuesday Hot Springs would once again host the Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing, Aug. 11-14, 2011, on Lake Ouachita. The last time the Forrest Wood Cup, the sport’s premier event, was held in Hot Springs was 2007 and Scott Suggs of Bryant, Ark., made professional fishing history winning the first $1 million first-place cash prize.

"We couldn't be happier about returning to Hot Springs for the 2011 Forrest Wood Cup," said Charlie Evans, President and CEO of FLW Outdoors. "The then-record attendance we had at the 2007 Forrest Wood Cup and FLW Outdoors Expo speaks volumes about the enthusiasm for bass fishing that fans have throughout the state and the entire region."

Hot Springs isn't a new venue for FLW Outdoors' championship tournaments. The 2005 Forrest Wood Cup and FLW Outdoors Expo was held on Lake Hamilton, a sister lake to Lake Ouachita, and drew a then-record crowd of 40,671 fans to the Hot Springs Convention Center and Summit Arena over the course of four days. Those same fans ultimately witnessed Hot Springs resident and bass-fishing legend George Cochran reel in $500,000. The Forrest Wood Cup returned to Hot Springs and Lake Ouachita in 2007 where many of those same fans and more, 61,967 to be exact, saw Suggs make history.

image“The 2007 Forrest Wood Cup was by far the largest and most successful event we’ve ever held in the Hot Springs Convention Center since the construction of Summit Arena in 2003," said Steve Arrison, executive director for the Hot Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Hot Springs is a bass-fishing town situated along some fantastic lakes and full of fishing fans. There's no better place to hold the most lucrative event in the history of the sport."

In addition to the tournament and the international media coverage it will receive, the FLW Outdoors Expo, which will feature hundreds of exhibits and activities, will be held at the convention center and the live weigh-ins will be held at Summit Arena. Visitors from around the globe will not only catch the world's best bass-fishing action, they'll also receive great buys on everything from crankbaits to bass boats at the outdoor show.

Hot Springs is currently hosting two FLW Outdoors tournaments – the FLW Tour Chevy Open and the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. The Chevy Open is being held on Lake Ouachita and the All-American is being held on DeGray Lake. Fans can enjoy the FLW Outdoors Expo at the Hot Springs Convention Center on Friday, May 28 from 4 – 9 p.m. and Saturday, May 29 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The final weigh-ins will be at 3 and 4 p.m., respectively, on Saturday at Summit Arena.

Proposal of a 3 tournament challenge circuit

With the growing number of Bass tournaments being held each year with the number of circuits increasing, it is getting harder to schedule everybody to be on the water they would like to hold a tournament on.  I have also noticed that at the club level, the basis of tournament fishing has changed; it has become more competitive and less of a focus on the basics of teaching more people to be successful.  Personally, I would like to have all of our tournaments on the same bodies of water as everybody else, but with permitting requirements that is not always an option.  I think I have an idea that would make the permitting process and get more clubs on the more favorable bodies of water every year.

I propose that each club has 3 of their tournaments on the same body of water as another, or even 2 other clubs in a head to head format.  I see it going like this:

Instead of 8 clubs applying for 3 permits each totaling 24 permits, in the head to head format there would only need to be 12 permits max total.

For instance:

April

  • Club A & Club B go head to head at Banks Lake

  • Club C & D go head to head on Moses Lake

  • Club E & F go head to head on Potholes

  • Club G & H go head to head on Lake Washington

May

  • Club A, C, and G go head to head on Roosevelt

  • Club B, D, & E go head to head on the Columbia at Tri-Cities

  • Club F & H go head to head on Moses Lake

June

  • Club A & H go head to head on Potholes

  • Club B & C go head to head on Lake Washington

  • Club E & G go head to head on Banks Lake

  • Club D & F go head to head on Roosevelt

In this scenario there were only 11 permits used, and each club can still apply for 4 additional.  If clubs agree to this there will be set months that they don’t pick their permits, the bodies of water and their head to head opponent will be picked randomly by a drawing.  Each club can still keep track of their own weigh-ins to keep individual standings, but the head to head tournaments will be club vs. club.  Determining a weekend winner will be based on lbs per angler, which should entice the clubs to work together to help everybody catch more fish.  This will also spawn more relationships between clubs in friendly competition.  There can be a trophy awarded to the top club at the end of the year based on lbs per angler.  I don’t think basing it on total weight would necessarily be right, if a club draws Moses Lake, Potholes, and Lake Washington they could have a decisive advantage on total lbs against a club that might draw Tri-Cities, Banks, and Lake Washington.

When the names are drawn there will be a HOME team and VISITORS, purely for the basis of weigh ins.  Visitors runs weigh in on Saturday, but blasts off first.  Home team does Sunday and goes out first.

This is just a brief outline of how I see it working; there can be more discussion if people are interested.
